For Teachers

Background

This WebQuest was designed for students in 6th or 7th grade. This is meant to be done with cooperating teachers in English and Social Studies. It comes after the completion of a unit in Social Studies on Ancient Greece and a unit in English on newspapers and journalistic writing.

State Standards

English

LA 1.1.6.13 - Read to acquire information for different purposes such as preparing a research project or gaining a general impression of the material presented in an article.
LA 2.2.6.7 - Understand that composing a piece may require the generation of multiple drafts to reflect the author's purpose and clarify thoughts.
LA 2.2.6.8 - Analyze the progress of their writing independently and in collaboration with others.
LA 2.2.6.11 - Demonstrate an understanding of the format and characteristics of various forms of writing including friendly letters, business letters, reports, jokes, riddles, news articles, scripts, captions, video overlays, interviews, fiction, poetry, biography, invitations, charts, songs, and essays.

Social Studies

SS 4.16.6.9 - Display historical perspective by describing the past through the eyes and experiences of those who were there, as related through their memories, literature, diaries, letters, debates, arts, maps, and artifacts.

Objectives

To have students:
Read about ancient Greece and gather information for articles/ads
Write articles/ads as if they were experiencing the events using the information gathered
Produce a professional looking newspaper
